Dave Mustaine funda Megadeth en 1983 tras ser expulsado de Metallica debido a problemas de personalidad y alcohol. Según otra versión, Dave fue expulsado por dar un golpe a James Hetfield, tras agredir este último al guitarrista, el cual le gritaba que nadie le tocase las drogas que llevaba en el coche.
Sus antiguos compañeros le expulsaron y le enviaron de regreso a casa en un viaje de 48 horas en autobús, durante el cual el enojo que Mustaine llevaba dentro provocó que se acentuase la idea de iniciar su propia banda. Durante este viaje, Mustaine leyó en un panfleto político el término “megadeath” unidad de medida equivalente a un millón de muertes humanas empleada en cálculos del ejército estadounidense) y de ahí vino el nombre de este exponente del thrash metal. Más tarde, Mustaine declararía que, después de ser despedido de Metallica, iba a ser más rápido que ellos. Anteriormente, Mustaine había estado barajando el nombre de Fallen Angel, el nombre de un proyecto de corta vida establecido en 1983 con el bajista Matt Kisselstein.
A través de sus más de 30 años activos, Megadeth ha tenido gran cantidad de miembros oficiales, siendo Mustaine el único permanente y el principal compositor; por su parte, el bajista David Ellefson ha participado en la mayoría de sus discos y giras, estando ausente solo por 8 años. En todo este tiempo, la banda ha lanzado catorce álbumes de estudio, tres EP y dos álbumes en vivo.
Megadeth es conocida por su distintivo estilo en las guitarras, la forma peculiar de cantar de Mustaine, la complejidad musical conformada por la gran técnica que contiene su música.Es comúnmente mencionada como una de los cuatro grandes del thrash metal, junto a Metallica, Slayer y Anthrax.
