Creado por Oscar Dronjak, un músico sueco con experiencia en bandas habiendo ya creado “CEREMONIAL OATH”, un proyecto Death Metal. Luego decide experimentar el Heavy/Power Metal, contactando a Jesper Strömblad (“CRYSTAL AGE” y “IN FLAMES”), Niklas Sundin y Mikael Stanne (“DARK TRANQUILLITY”) además de Johan Larsson. Con un duro inicio, tanto porque en Suecia el estilo predominante era el Death Metal (lo que les complicaba participar en eventos) y también todos los proyectos que tenían los integrantes, logran impactar en el concurso “Rockslaget”, donde impactaron y lograron avanzar en esta gran banda.
